Dictionary references

In advanced mode for text translation, you can get additional information from the dictionary about any word or a collocation in the source text if that word or a collocation is in the dictionary. Just select the text and click the “Dictionary” button. Dictionary reference

The resulting window will show the dictionary information on active and inactive translations (see below) and any comments about the translation. Dictionary reference

Main and additional translations

Generally, words in any language can be translated differently depending on the subject, grammatical structure, or context. The dictionary structure allows you to view a variety of meanings for any given word.

Example:
The English noun “bank” has many meanings: it may mean a bank as a financial institution, the bank of a river or lake, or a databank, meaning a set of data, etc.

Although several meanings of a word may be found in the dictionary, displaying all of them in the translation doesn’t make sense, as the text may become almost unreadable. To avoid this, some meanings are marked in the dictionary as active - those actually used by the program during the translation session - whereas others are marked as inactive, or additional - those present in the dictionary, but not in use for the current translation task.

Both active and inactive translations may be accompanied by comments in brackets before the translation. Comments are never shown in the body of a translation, but they may contain useful information which will help you to better understand the meaning depending on the original context.

The translation program itself cannot always identify which of the grammatically equivalent translations in the dictionary is the most appropriate in each case, so it is up to you to make this decision.

Note: Unlike the online service, the dictionary information in the PROMT machine translation systemscan be modified by the user: you can make an inactive translation active and vice versa, or add comments to any translation that may be helpful in further operation. Also, if you are not satisfied with the result, you can select the most suitable translation from those in the dictionary and place it first in the list of active translations. The next time this text arises in a source text, the selected meaning will automatically be used for translation.
